Lt. Gen. Vinay Shankar retired from the Army in Dec 2000 after 40 years of service. He has taken part in the wars of ’62, '65 and '71. He has also been involved in counter insurgency operation in Nagaland and Manipur. His last appointment was the Director General of Artillery in which capacity he had the opportunity to oversee the employment of the Artillery during the Kargil War. For his distinguished services he has been awarded the Param Vashist Sewa, the Ati Vashist Sewa and the Vashist Sewa Medals. After retirement he has been a senior adviser to L&T and Punj Lloyd.

In addition he has written a fortnightly column for the Asian Age for four years on security, defense, strategy and international relations and has been contributing articles to other magazines and newspapers. He is an Editorial Consultant to the Indian Defense Review and is a life member of the United Services Institute of India, The Institute of Defense studies and Analysis and the India International Centre.
